Game Development: A Look into North East Indie Studio, Nosebleed Interactive

Newcastle is becoming widely regarded in the gaming industry as of late, perhaps one of the most well-known companies it houses is Ubisoft reflections, responsible for many franchises including Assassins Creed.

However, it also houses a selection of Independent games companies one of which being Nosebleed Interactive.

Nosebleed interactive has been running for seven years now producing console and PC games with a key emphasis on fun.

The company has been named as one of the Top 50 creative companies in the country by Creative England.

They’ve won various awards from winning the PlayStation Mobile Pioneers competition, as well as best small to medium business in the Newcastle Business Awards.

They are also one of the first handful of companies to receive support from the prestigious UK Games Fund.

Their first game, The Hungry Horde, was released in 2014 as part of the PlayStation Plus instant game collection and was an action strategy game where you control a horde of zombies and infect the living.

They then moved onto Vostok Inc. a cross platform twin stick shooter meets idle clicker game.

Along with their games they also do work for hire which has ranged from work for Disney among other various companies making their work extremely diverse.

Speaking about this range Andreas Firnigl, director at Nosebleed Interactive said: “We’ve done games about debt management, renders of housing and this all helps us to develop the things we want to do whilst learning and using the knowledge for our own games.”

Their next game is set to be a racing game that takes the compelling elements of RPGS’s and combines it with a racing game.

Andreas spoke about the upcoming game saying: “I buy racing games all the time and inherently they feel really cool, driving round, drifting round corners but after 2/3 hours I’m kind of bored.

“Whereas something like Final Fantasy I play 100 of hours and what keeps me playing is the levelling system and all of the interesting upgrades.

“So we are trying to take that and merge it into a racing game to create a ‘CARPG’.

“We just want to get this next game ready to go right now and then we’ve got some more ideas under wrap’s which people seem really interested in.”

As an independent studio, it’s important to get your games out there and recognised.

One of the proudest moments Andreas recalls is having Eurogamer give them a glowing review.

Speaking about this Andreas said: “It’s those kinds of moments of knowing people enjoy your game, people on twitter letting you know they loved your game, that’s one of the reasons we do it.”

They also had full feature video with PlayStation access which boasts over 1.7 million subscribers on their YouTube platform.

They even developed a game for stroke rehabilitation which you can learn more about in the video below.

Looking to the future of the company Andreas said: “I just want to keep making games I enjoy the challenge of solving problems.

“I’d love to see the team grow and possibly have two projects running at once if it’s possible – here’s to another seven years!”
